Apple of my eye

Eric and I went grocery shopping on Friday since Saturday was the last Clemson home game. This was foolish, because the store was packed with people who took off work to get their game-day feasts ready. But we did come home with an awesome machine:

The fruits of our labors: curly fries!

We walked the Natural Heritage trail at the Botanical Garden on Saturday. The boys ran the whole way, and barely sat still in the giant's chair long enough for a picture. We could only get drive-bys of them inside the rock rocketship.

And Sunday was a nice day, again! So we went to a pick-your-own farm about 45 minutes away. We got to listen to Anansi the Spider stories, read by Denzel Washington. I annoyed everyone by saying all the best lines along with him (like "bigger than biggest bamboo" and "hot bean drippin' down him head and face"), as is my parental privilege.

There were slim pickins indeed at the farm, but we did find some beautiful black berries, growing right in the blackberry patch! They were in full view of the restaurant and wedding party, and we cackled to ourselves to think that people thought we thought they were real blackberries. We are no city fools! Those were valuable pokeberries! The secrets of using pokeberries to make a lightfast dye have only recently been revealed and are now available on the internets. I will tell you now - the secret is vinegar.

Since there was so little else, the boys really got into being helpful and collecting pokeberries with us, and they understood right away that these were not for eating. Once we got into the orchard, though, we did find about four pounds of apples, in among the rotten, fermenting, bee-filled ankle-twisters hanging about. We had a great time wandering around, and the farm is open to wanderers year-round. Muscadines and scuppernongs are still available, and some purple LSU figs, and some persimmons...
