Right on!

‘‘In summary, an industrial cellulose fermentation might be

profitable if the cost of collection of raw materials could be min-

imized through the use of numerous small plants, if the small

plants could be cheaply constructed, if the operation could be

made automatic to decrease necessary personnel, and if the

concentration of cellulose fermented could be increased by con-

tinuous removal of fermentation products. Although such a sit-

uation is at present quite out of the question as an industrial

process, it is almost an exact specification of the ruminant ani-

mal, a small fermentation unit which gathers the raw materials,

transfers it to the fermentation chamber, and regulates its fur-

ther passage, continuously absorbs the fermentation products,

and transforms them into a few valuable substances, meat,

milk, etc. To these advantages must be added the crowning

adaptation: the unit replicates itself.”

Quotation from Robert Hungate (1950), the father of both rumen microbiology and the anaerobic culture technique that bears his name.

The awesome part is that people are fermenting cellulosic biomass by inoculating it with cultures taken from cow rumens, among other sources. The future is almost here!

Gotta Catch Them All!

This may be Eric in a few days.

poor mo

So Maurice is a nutjob.

He has burnt off all his giant eyebrow hairs except one over each eye. Whenever I light a candle all he wants is to smell it, and he gets very frustrated that he can't stick his face into the flame without it hurting.

This morning he tripped on the balcony and fell off of it onto the stairs, and then fell down the stairs.

He likes to curl up into any basket-type thing we have, including the spider plant pot and containers on cabinets up above the fridge. That's not so curious really. But he can fold his legs all the way up under his head!

He and Pocky give each other vampire bites when they fight.

He doesn't understand toes, and that they are attached to the rest of me. Or petting. He would rather suck on your finger, and chew it a little, than be petted.

He's a good cat though. Yay Maurice!

Work time!

Here's a little something cheery to wake up to:

Tanning salons ho!

Annie might have had the right idea all along: UV exposure may reduce MS symptoms. But this is in mice that don't have MS, because MS is a human disease. They have a virus instead.

This mouse looks pretty damn content though. Sunshine makes everyone feel good.

humph.

It's been raining - it was the perfect time to put the plants out I guess.

Otherwise it's disheartening. No sun, for days - what is this, Maryland?

Victorinox Presentation Master Swiss Army Knife

What use could you possibly have for a FlashDrive with a knife on it.... or is it a knife with a FlashDrive in it... or is it the next generation of self autonomous robots bent on world destruction.... probably just the first thing...

Happy days

Awesome weekend. Sunday we moved the plants outside and rearranged the furniture. Everything is fresh and clean. So freash and so clean clean.

We rode bikes to get beer and wine in a box, and then to get pizza, and then to City Park, where we laid in the grass in the sun and had our own private party. We solved a lot of the world's problems, including that of the hippies.

Then to Paul's house, where the guys played bocci in the bumpy front yard, and I did stupid homework.

But the craziest part was that afterwards, when we had all had our fill of green chili beer cheese soup, the cat Abby disappeared. We discovered she had crawled her way into and down a vent.

Contraptions were made, of string and wire, but no dice. The fire department came and they looked at all the walls with their heat-seeing device, but no dice. Poor poor Abby. She is a very white cat.

Yesterday we heard from Paul that she made it out of the vent all on her own, and she was completely black. It took two baths to get her clean.

I have lots of stupid research papers to write, which is way harder than St. John's papers because you are required to talk about what other people think. Can't wait for summer and beers in the park Every Day!!!
